Ely Stage Stop Happenings
The weather may be changing but there are still lots of things happening at the Ely Stage Stop & Country Museum. Although usually open every Saturday and Sunday, the museum will be closed the weekend of October 22 and 23. Ely has been chosen as the venue for a Boy Scout weekend campout. This is an annual event for the Boy Scouts allowing them to perform community service projects while honing their camping skills. This year they will camp out for two nights on the Ely property, clearing the hillside below Ely’s main house during the day.
That particular weekend would also have been Ely’s Living History Day. That activity is being pushed to the next Saturday, October 29. Historian Ruby Glebe will return to the Stage Stop that day to share more stories from the past. Glebe preserves and promotes Lake County’s historical resources. Fifteen years ago, the Lake County Board of Supervisors appointed Glebe to the position of Lake County Historian. She is only the third person to hold this distinction, preceded by Henry Mauldin and Marion Goebel.
Glebe will be talking about the Pine Flat Community of 1870, once a quicksilver mining boomtown in the rugged Mayacamas Mountains that straddle Lake, Napa and Sonoma counties. Nothing remains of the community that was killed by the plummeting price of quicksilver and periodic wildfires that plague the area. Her presentation will begin at noon. Admission is free with donations accepted. Through these Living History Days at Ely, the stories of Lake County’s history are being preserved for future generations.
Finally, save the date of November 6 when Ely again hosts the California Old Time Fiddlers Association for a jam session in the Ely barn from noon till 2 p.m. Musicians will follow the usual round-robin format with donations benefitting both the Ely Stage Stop, helping to fund the construction of the blacksmith shop, and the Old Time Fiddlers Association District 10, using it to partially fund their scholarship programs.
The Lake County Historical Society’s Ely Stage Stop & Country Museum is located at 9921 State Hwy 281 (Soda Bay Road) in Kelseyville, near Clearlake Riviera, just north of Hwy 29-Kit’s Corner. Current hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. each Saturday and Sunday. Private tours can be arranged by appointment. Facilities are available to support events, conferences, or family gatherings. Celebrate a wedding, reception, special anniversary, or family reunion.
Visit www.elystagestop.org or www.lakecountyhistory.org, check out the stage stop on Facebook at www.facebook.com/elystagestop, or call the museum at 707-533-9990.
The Ely Stage Stop & Country Museum welcomes more docents to greet visitors and share information on our history, our current displays, and our planned events. Volunteers for maintenance and construction projects are also needed. Come join the Lake County Historical Society and become a volunteer at Ely or our sister museum, the Gibson Museum & Cultural Center in Middletown. Applications are always available.

Ely Stage Stop Marketplace Joins Fiddlers’ Jam in October
The October 2 Fiddlers’ Jam at the Ely Stage Stop & Country Museum welcomes the return of the Ely Stage Stop Marketplace. This free, family friendly, fun-packed day can be enjoyed by all, young and old alike. The Marketplace, just outside the Ely barn, will feature local handcrafted goods and will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. As usual, musicians will jam from noon to 2 p.m. inside the barn.
Admission is free and there will be fun for all ages. Enjoy music, refreshments, and the opportunity to browse and purchase the wares of local craftsmen and artists. Food will be available for purchase on site from the Cactus Grill in Clearlake.
Items available at the marketplace will include jewelry, beauty products, wood and metal products, local honey, books, and more.
The Lake County Model A Club plans to display several Ford Model A vehicles during the Marketplace. Approximately 5,000,000 were made and approximately 1,000,000 are still on the road today according to club member Dick Munger.
Beverages and tasty treats will be provided by the docents in the barn. Take a ride up to the house on the hay wagon where you can enjoy the newest displays of Mason and Ball canning jars and antique kitchen gadgets.
Donations made during the fiddling benefit both the Ely Stage Stop, helping to fund the blacksmith shop, and the Old Time Fiddlers Association, District 10, who uses it to partially fund their scholarship programs.

Hop on the Ely Stage and head for the Riviera Hills Round Up
On July 24, 2011, the Lake County Historical Society, a non-profit organization, opened the Ely Stage Stop & Country Museum to the public marking the beginning of what would become one of the most important educational and cultural sites in Lake County.
Through its displays, activities, and collections, the Stage Stop offers the public a chance to step back in time, experiencing and learning about the region’s history, geography, and culture. In addition to free general public admission, the museum hosts regularly scheduled educational programs for local school children, community activities and provides facilities for large group gatherings such as family reunions, meetings, lectures, community fundraising events, weddings, and training programs.
The Stage Stop operates and flourishes solely by donations of time and money. Join the Ely docents and volunteers on Friday, August 26, from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Riviera Hills Restaurant & Lounge for a fundraiser round up Italian-style. Enjoy an evening of family, friends and fun as we raise a fork (and some funds) to complete the Blacksmith Shop. Feast as the Italians do on a multi-course buffet of antipasto, primo, secondo, contorno and dolce. A no host bar will be available.
John Parker, Ph.D., will be the keynote speaker talking about an 1876 Lake County painting that was recently discovered in the Rothschild collection.
Opportunities to win raffle baskets and bid on silent and live auction items will round out the evening of fun. A Boat Tour of Anderson Marsh for 6 led by Park Founder, John Parker, is just one of the auction items that will be available.
Tickets for the feast and fun are $50 per person and must be purchased in advance by Monday, August 15. Seating is limited, so purchase now. Stop by the museum during visitor hours and purchase them from the docents or call 707.279.0493.

Lessons From Green Water Shared at Ely Stage Stop’s Living History Day
The popular Living History Day series continues at the Ely Stage Stop & Country Museum on Saturday, June 25. On the fourth Saturday of each month local historians come to the main house to visit with guests and answer questions regarding different aspects of Lake County history. As these visits are recorded, the stories of Lake County’s history are being preserved for future generations.
This month Dr. Harry Lyons, Yuba College Biology Professor, will join Ely guests for Living History Day. Dr. Lyons will weave the stories of two nutrient-rich aquatic ecosystems, the Hudson River and Clear Lake, addressing the problems and promises of such rich biological communities. Although differing in their geological and hydrologic histories, the two systems face similar problems with over-enrichment and point-source contamination. Most feel the biological condition of the Hudson has improved; some feel the biological condition of Clear Lake has not. Dr. Lyons’s talk will address the questions – Can the political action taken on behalf of the Hudson River serve as a model for pushing improvement of water quality in Clear Lake? How is the chance of success through political action dependent on the type of pollution and its causes?
Dr. Lyons grew up swimming and fishing in the Hudson River. His life-long interest in water led him to pursue his PhD in oceanography from the Scripps Institution of the University of California after academic work at Rutgers and Stanford. He has lived by, sampled from, and swum in Clear Lake for over thirty-five years. His talks are always peppered with the spirit of relevant songs. His presentation will begin at noon.
